With so many of us complaining that we don’t get enough sleep, you’d think we’d have no trouble sleeping when we go to bed at night. However, more than 70 million Americans complain of not sleeping properly. Buying a new bed mattress can help, but how to choose the one that’s best for you? Here are some tips to help you get the best bed mattress.
But how do you know if buying a new bed mattress will help you sleep better? Well, if you wake up in the morning with aches and pains, or if you sleep better when you stay at a friend’s or relative’s house or when you stay at a hotel, it could be an indication that it’s time to change your mattress for a new one.
A mattress is the most important piece of furniture in your home, after all, you spend one-third of your life using it and getting enough sleep is the biggest contributor to feeling healthy. But buying a new one can be a confusing business – not to mention expensive. Americans spend more than $7 billion dollars a year on mattresses!
So, what to look for? The fact is you can’t buy cheap and expect to sleep well. You will need to think of spending a minimum of $800 for a new queen-size mattress, no matter what type it is. Anything costing less, may feel great in the showroom but within a short time span you’ll wish you’d spent more.
There are several types of mattress on the market; there’s the traditional inner spring, pocketed spring, latex, air, water and the newest arrival; the memory foam mattress. Each has its merits. Inner spring has the feel that we’re all used to and still makes up the vast majority of sales. If you do want an inner spring, make sure it has at least 390 coils and look for well-known, respected brands like Simmons, Kingsdown and Sealy Tempurpedic.
Air and water mattresses are specialist mattresses. Water mattresses have been improved lately to help prevent motion disturbance and air mattresses are feeling less and less like camping bed mattresses. The great thing about air is that you can adjust the firmness to just how you like it and most are split in half so partners can set their own preferred firmness.
Latex is making a bit of a comeback lately. Its strengths are that it’s more eco-friendly than memory foam mattress but still conform to a sleeper’s body shape; it doesn’t need flipping and it’s very non-allergenic.
The memory foam mattress is the latest type of mattress and is becoming very popular. The viscoelastic foam is unlike ordinary foam as it conforms to body shape rather then just gets squashed down. It’s very good at spreading weight evenly thereby eliminating pressure points.
Whichever type you choose you should always test it before you buy. Never buy online unless you’ve first had a chance to try it for real in a store. When you do go along, dress in loose fitting, comfortable clothing and lie down of the mattress for at least 15 minutes in your favorite sleeping position.
Many bed mattresses come with pillow tops nowadays. If you do decide to buy one of these types you may find that it develops ruts and craters after a comparatively short time. If this happens, you’ll need to replace the whole mattress even though the rest of the mattress is fine.
Be prepared to negotiate price. Don’t be afraid to ask for price reductions, especially if you’ve seen cheaper prices online. Even if they won’t move on price they may throw in a few goodies like pillows, bedding, free deliver, free disposal of your old mattress and extended warranties etc.
This brings us to the most important point: warranties. Before you buy find out exactly the warranty of the bed mattress. Look for the most generous and read the small print; most companies won’t accept returns if there’s the slightest mark on the mattress. And, always leave the tag on.
There’s no such thing as the best bed mattress, but by doing a little homework you should be able to find the perfect one for you.
